Enjoy the out of doors and be creative in the Garden

Loving to be outdoors is great, doing things that help the environment or help you understand plants and their role is even better! Registration is required.

Great Backyard Bird Count

girl-binocularsBorrow binoculars and learn how to use them to spot birds in the garden.  Go on a guided bird walk and visit the different stations to find out what a bird’s beak tells us about its food habits, discover what birds will find a home in the many birdhouses around the gardens. Find out why birds love the gardens. Make a bird feeder for the gardens and one for your own backyard.

Free with regular garden admission.



– Bug Hunt for Garden Helpers –

Many insects and bugs have a useful function in the garden. Some are real pests, yet others are welcome garden friends. Learn about insects, arachnids and observe them in their natural habitats as you are guided through the gardens. A favorite among summer camp group visitors.

Tour Duration: 1 hour

– Power of a Flower –

For anyone passionate about flowers but ideal for Junior Girl Scouts working towards acquiring the flower badge.

Tour Duration: 1,5 hour

– ID a Tree –

How amazing to be able to identify a tree. Learn how you can build this skill and what to look for to ID a tree.

Tour Duration: 1,5 hour

– Looking at Sculpture

Looking at sculpture. Smith-Gilbert Gardens is proud to be one of a select number of gardens in the United States that includes sculpture as part of its interest. While walking the garden children will be engaged to look at the sometimes quite colorful 30+ sculptures thoughtfully placed on the garden grounds. Children will be engaged in looking at sculpture, thinking about the materials used and an artist’s perspective. Bring your clipboard or journal and pencil to make some sketches of your own!
