Artist Profile – John Guernsey

Guernsey’s Spring Award Winner

If you have visited the Brick Room Gallery in the past couple of years, you probably took note of artist John Guernsey’s work. He has displayed his oil landscapes of Smith-Gilbert Gardens several times and won multiple awards at our Plein Air painting competitions.

A former IBM financial administrator, this Marietta resident of 18 years is self taught. Originally from California, he admired the western painters’ dynamic landscapes and their nice sense of story. So he decided to try painting. He was drawn to oils because they are a classic medium and are particularly rich. That was seven years ago. He now creates full time, mostly landscapes with some type of building included.

He began sharing his artistic knowledge about 2 years ago and is an instructor at the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art, Art School at Sandy Springs and private workshops. He brings his students to the Gardens for inspiration.

Mr. Guernsey has his work on display at Gallery 202 in Franklin,TN, The Art House in Buckhead, and at Marietta’s First Friday Art Walks. He will be doing a demonstration at Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art on September 2nd. If you don’t catch him at any of those places, come look for him (or his work) here at the Gardens.
