Exciting outdoor field trips! 

Any age group is welcome to tour the gardens.

Our current children’s tours are designed for children K through 12th Grades and are correlated to the Georgia Standards of Excellence

  • Bring your picnic to enjoy after your tour.
  • Groups of 8 or more may schedule a guided tour.
  • Fees for tours are $6 per child.
  • 1 adult free per 10 children.
  • For homeschool, 1 adult free per 5 children (additional adults for each group is $7)

All tours should be booked up to 2 weeks in advance. A deposit is required to confirm your date and time of tour. Spring are popular field trip times, please book early to ensure your date of preference. Tour duration : 60-75 min.

** Special donations allow us to offer a reduced-price field trip for Title I school groups.

These funds are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Garden Explorer

Geared to the young garden explorers (Kindergarten – 5th grade) where children are guided along kid appealing highlights of the garden while reinforcing what they study in the classroom. They will learn about the parts of a plant, seeds, flowers and fruits; explore the differences and similarities in plants and use their senses to explore.

Garden explorers will experience an eye opener in the kid friendly Learn & Play Garden on growing vegetables, smelling herbs, admiring colors and fragrant flowers. They will see pollinators at work, feel like a giant in between the bonsai, walk through the conifer and rock gardens, discover pitcher plants in the bog garden, smell a range of rose perfumes, glance at the beehives from a safe distance and see an educational hive up close,  discover the colorful koi…

All students participate in a hands-on activity.

Use your ‘Garden Senses’

Explore the Gardens using all 5 senses by viewing forms of trees and activities of animals, listening to bird songs and waterfalls, smelling flowers, touching sculptures and tasting our wonderful Gardens’ Honey. Children will gain new awareness of their surroundings by these guided observations.

Looking for Garden Helpers: Bug Hunt tour

Summer campers this is for you! Bring your group and explore the Gardens together with a docent and learn about the small garden helpers. Equipped with a magnifying lens, a ‘bug’ sheet and a knowledgeable docent you will use your observation skills to spot the arthropods and understand their function in the garden.

Tour duration : 60-75min.

Please read the following to make the most of your Smith-Gilbert Gardens Field trip.

  • Scheduling: All field trips require a reservation to be made at least two weeks in advance. Call 770-919-0248 or email us. A deposit of $50 is required at the time of your reservation to keep your date and time of preference. The remaining balance is expected upon arrival. Make all checks payable to Smith-Gilbert Gardens, or call with credit card information. We accept Visa, Mastercard or Discover.
  • Field trip days are Tuesdays, Wednesday, Thursdays and Fridays; tours start at 10am.
  • Guided tours are scheduled for 8-60 students.
  • Tours are limited and scheduled on a first-come, first serve basis.
  • Guided tours are 1 – 1 1/4 hour. Please add time to arrive, gather and if desired, a picnic.

    In case of inclement weather (thunderstorms, tornado warnings etc.) we understand and we will work with you to reschedule your tour.
  • Special Needs: Please inform us if your group has students with special needs and we will discuss the options.
  • Attire: The Garden tours take place out of doors. Please dress comfortably for the weather announced on your field trip day, wear comfortable shoes, sunscreen, etc.
  • Cancellations: Cancellations must be made 30 days prior to the date of your field trip to have the $50 deposit fee refunded. If the cancellation is made less than 30 days in advance the deposit will not be refunded. If you have to cancel your tour please contact 770-919-0248.
  • Picnic: You are welcome to bring your lunch and enjoy it in our shaded picnic area (up to 40 people) or bring your blankets and enjoy lunch in the field below the rose garden.
  • There is no food or drinks for sale on the premises. There is a water fountain.
  • Bathrooms are limited.
  • Parking: parking is free but limited.
